Junior School Academic Program

Consisting of students from Kindergarten to Grade 5, our Junior School provides a welcoming, nurturing environment in which young minds are actively engaged and motivated to learn. In accordance with the British Columbia Curriculum, students receive instruction in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Drama, Modern Foreign Language, as well as Physical and Health Education. In addition, we weave a number of proven pedagogical methods into the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme curriculum framework to build a well-rounded and prepared student. Through this multidisciplinary approach, students are challenged to make holistic connections between subject areas. Consistent with our school vision, our educators provoke curiosity, inspiring learning for life.

Southpointe Academy challenges students to think inventively and to engage in learning beyond the classroom. To this end, we offer our students a wide variety of co-curricular activities to support self-expression and student exploration. Within the classroom, students benefit from small class sizes and from an inspired team of experienced educators. Our Junior School students depart well prepared for our Senior School program, and driven to better their school community.

IB AUTHORIZED SCHOOL: Primary Years Programme, Grades K-5

Southpointe Academy is committed to supporting the IB programme and philosophy at the K-5 PYP level. This is an inclusive programme for all students of our K-5 school programme with all students engaged with the PYP to the fullest extent possible.

As an International Baccalaureate authorized world school, Southpointe Academy has implemented the curriculum framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Designed for elementary school students aged 3-12, the program aims to foster the holistic growth of the developing child and encourage life-long learning. The program furthers students’ collaborative, analytical, and problem-solving skills through the integration of a concept driven, inquiry-based curriculum. The PYP framework incorporates five essential elements: Concepts, Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes and Action.

At each grade level, students engage in units of inquiry organized under six globally significant transdisciplinary themes framed under the school’s Programme of Inquiry.

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in time and place
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • How we share the planet

Our PYP Curriculum Coordinator collaboratively plans Units of Inquiry with homeroom and specialist teachers to address issues of local and global significance, to ensure a dynamic educational experience that exceeds the requirements of both the program and the British Columbia Curriculum. By presenting an inquiry-based curriculum, we endeavour to generate open mindedness and engagement with an increasingly interconnected world among our informed young scholars.

As students complete the program, they glean the research and communication skills essential to success during later stages of their education. This culminates at the PYP Exhibition, during which Grade 5 students work collaboratively in small groups to present their learning process and share their perspectives on significant current issues.
