Southpointe Updates: Winter 2017

Alumni Meetup Tour 2017

This September, Mr. Rob McCall, Director of Athletics and Alumni Relations, and Mr. Steve Hilton, Faculty Member, hosted two Alumni Meetups as part of Southpointe’s 2017 Alumni Meetup Tour. For the first time, toured the Lower Mainland area and invited our alumni to join us in Burnaby at the Hop and Vine Taphouse and UBC, Vancouver at Mahony & Son’s Public House.

We were happy to see so many of our alumni come out to meet us and we are continuing the Tour with a meetup in Victoria on December 1. Southpointe will also be hosting an Alumni Winter Social in downtown Vancouver on December 23rd. For more details, please see the Winter e-Newsletter, the Southpointe Titan Alumni Facebook or Southpointe Titan Alumni Instagram.

Canadian Veteran Visits Southpointe Academy

On November 8, 2017, Southpointe Academy students had the opportunity to interact with a war veteran, Gerry Vowles, and reflect on why Remembrance Day is important. Mr. Vowles spoke about veterans, the value of freedom and how youth can be instrumental in contributing toward a peaceful world:  “Veterans are the people that went to war to fight for freedom; the freedoms of all the people and all the children that I am talking to today. That’s what it is all about, we want them to remember all the people that went out and actually didn’t come back because of it (war).”

Breakfast Television journalist, Tom Walsh, captured the story for the segment. To view the complete story, click here.

Remembrance Day 2017

On November 9, 2017, Southpointe students, parents, grandparents and alumni gathered for our annual Remembrance Day Ceremony to honour war veterans and those who continue to serve our country in defence of freedom.

We welcomed families and community members to join us at Southpointe Academy as we took time to remember their sacrifices. The ceremony was followed by a gathering of veterans from the community and our grandparents.

This year, as with every Remembrance Day Ceremony, we attempted to raise in our students an awareness of the cost of freedom by remembering those who lost their lives in war, those survivors whose lives were changed forever, and those who continue to serve around the world in peacekeeping missions as members of our armed forces.

Grandparents’ Tea 2017

The Remembrance Day Ceremony was followed by Southpointe’s Annual Grandparents’ Tea. We welcomed our Titan grandparents to The Jackson Carson Gymnasium where they were entertained by our Junior School musicians while being served refreshments by our Junior School Council Members. It was a memorable afternoon for the grandparents as well as for the students.
